The celebration of Halloween is believed to have began hundreds of years ago through Pagan rituals. The Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sah-win or sow-in) was the first and most important of the four quarter days in the medieval Gaelic calendar. Samhain was seen as a time when the ‘door’ to the Otherworld opened enough for the souls of the dead to come into our world. The souls of the dead were said to revisit their homes on Samhain. Feasts were had, at which the souls of dead kin were beckoned to attend and a place set at the table for them. Wearing costumes may have originated as a means of disguising oneself from harmful spirits/fairies and making jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween may also have been used to protect oneself and one’s home from them.
Halloween is my most favorable time of year. Costumes, candy, pumpkins, and a dash of spookiness make this time of year fearfully delightful. Here is the best of 2012 that I’ve found so far.
